First Guest Room

The intricate detail on the walls and the bed, along with the large wallpaper border and window dressings or show this room was for the guests of most importance. Prime Ministers, Governor Generals, noble and royalty have all stayed here.

The sleigh bed is one of the oldest in the house, dating back to 1838. This style of bed frame is to protect the most vulnerable parts of the body, the head and the feet. This helped with the Victorian's fear of catching pneumonia from the chill coming through the windows and the chimney at night.

Around the age of 13, girls would start wearing a corset like the one displayed in this room. Because they were so tight, a “chaise lounge” or fainting couch would be in the room so women would have something to fall on if they fainted.
