Night Nursery

Victorians thought it was unhealthy to sleep and play in the same room so there are no toys kept in here. All the children would sleep in the same bed, even if there were four of them. Until the age of five, Victorians did not distinguish between boys and girls. They would wear the same white dresses and have long hair.

Once a boy had turned five years old, he would wear an outfit resembling the one in the picture above the crib. At age eight boys might be sent to boarding school to take classes on business and politics, unless a good governess was on staff.

After turning five the girls would wear long dresses, like in the picture above the bed. Girls would stay in the house until they were about 16. They would have a “coming out” party and get married, often to a man more than 20 twenty years their senior.
